T he Super Falcons started their campaign at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on rocky ground, falling 0-1 against Brazil in their opening game.
Nigeria comes into the game after an outstanding performance at the 2023 FIFA World Cup and an eight-game unbeaten streak.
They started the match strongly, but missed a few chances to take the lead in Bordeaux, France.
Many people expected the squad to go into the tunnel ahead of the South Americans, or at least tied. But Gabi Nunez finished strong with roughly eight minutes remaining in the first half, giving Coach Randy Waldrum’s team a mountain to climb in the second half.
When the second half resumed, the Nigerians surged to regain control of the match. However, their last balls rarely threatened the Brazilian defence.
Despite making some substitutions and sending in fresh legs to try to equalise, the Brazilians fought valiantly to keep the Super Falcons at bay.
Nigeria’s next match is against the world champions Spain. That match is scheduled for July 28th, before the team faces Japan on July 31.
In the other Group C match, Spain defeated Japan 2-1, while the United States defeated Zambia 3-0 in Group B. France defeated Colombia 3-0 in a Group A match on the same day.
