G oogle has announced that its Uniform Resource Locator (URL) shortening service will be discontinued on August 25, 2025, adding that all goo.gl links will respond with a 404 error.
“The time has come to turn off the serving portion of Google URL Shortener”, the internet giant said.
Before the shutdown, goo.gl links will display an interstitial page on August 23, 2024. This page will notify users that “this link will no longer work in the near future.”
As the deadline approaches, this message will begin to display for a “percentage of existing links” and become more widespread. Google urges developers to promptly update affected links, as the interstitial page could disrupt link redirections.
In 2018, Google discontinued goo.gl and urged developers to transition to Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL), which has also been deprecated since then.
