I n a recent Twitter post, Mallam Ahmadu (@daldino) expressed frustration over the priorities of Nigeria's traditional leaders. He criticized the Ooni of Ife, Sultan of Sokoto, and other prominent figures for meeting with President Bola Tinubu to discuss suppressing peaceful protests rather than addressing pressing issues like unemployment, rising inflation, and insecurity.
Ahmadu's tweet quoted a post from TVC News (@tvcnewsng), which reported on the meeting that took place on July 25. The tweet highlighted the disconnect between the traditional leaders' actions and the expectations of the Nigerian populace. According to Ahmadu, these institutions, once revered, have lost the respect of citizens due to their perceived alignment with political interests rather than advocating for the masses.
"Ooni, Sultan, and co didn't meet FGN to discuss unemployment, rising inflation, or insecurity. But they are there to discuss how to suppress the peaceful protests. This is why citizens no longer respect these institutions. They don't fight for the masses, but the politicians," Ahmadu's tweet read.
The criticism comes amid increasing discontent among Nigerians over the government's handling of economic challenges and security concerns. Many citizens feel that traditional leaders should use their influence to advocate for solutions to these problems rather than supporting measures to stifle public dissent.
The meeting with President Tinubu, which included the Ooni of Ife and Sultan of Sokoto, focused on the planned protests and ways to manage them. This has raised questions about the role of traditional institutions in modern governance and their responsibility to the people they represent.
As Nigeria grapples with economic and security issues, the need for leaders who champion the cause of the people becomes more crucial. The public's response to the traditional leaders' recent actions underscores a growing demand for accountability and a shift in focus toward addressing the nation's core challenges.
