Vice President Kamala Harris Urges Cease-Fire Deal with Hamas Amid Rising Gaza Crisis

V ice President Kamala Harris called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to expedite a cease-fire agreement with Hamas to secure the release of hostages held since October 7. Harris described her conversation with Netanyahu as "frank and constructive," reaffirming Israel’s right to self-defense while expressing deep concern over the high death toll in Gaza and the worsening humanitarian crisis.

Highlighting President Joe Biden’s stance, Harris emphasized the urgent need to conclude the brutal conflict, which has resulted in the deaths of over 39,000 Palestinians. Her statements came a day after Netanyahu's speech to Congress, where he vowed "total victory" against Hamas and made scant mention of cease-fire efforts.

“There has been hopeful movement in the talks to secure an agreement on this deal,” Harris stated after meeting with Netanyahu. “It is time to get this deal done.”

Earlier, Netanyahu met with Biden to discuss a U.S.-backed, three-phase plan aimed at releasing hostages and establishing a sustained cease-fire. The White House emphasized the importance of finalizing the deal, improving aid flow to Gaza, and addressing threats from Iranian-backed militant groups.

Harris acknowledged the complexity of the situation, condemning Hamas’ brutality and stressing that the group's actions have significantly contributed to the suffering in Gaza. She underscored the need for leadership and compromise to close the gaps between the conflicting sides.

“What has happened in Gaza over the past nine months is devastating. We cannot look away in the face of these tragedies. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering. And I will not be silent,” Harris declared.

Thousands protested Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, with Harris condemning those who engaged in violence or praised Hamas. Netanyahu, heading to Florida for further meetings, received criticism from both political spectrums. While some argue that Biden hasn’t done enough to pressure Netanyahu to end the war, others question Harris' support for Israel.

Harris has long supported Israel, with her first overseas Senate trip in 2017 being to Israel and her consistent efforts to oppose measures condemning the nation. Her recent meeting with Netanyahu aimed to demonstrate her capability to serve as commander in chief amid heightened scrutiny.

The meeting concluded with Biden and Netanyahu reaffirming their commitment to securing the release of hostages and working towards a durable end to the Gaza conflict. The administration remains steadfast in holding all responsible parties accountable for the ongoing crisis and ensuring a resolution that addresses the humanitarian needs in Gaza.
