WTO: African group votes Okonjo-Iweala for 2nd term

 


T he African Group at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) has put forward a proposal to re-elect Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for another term as the organization's Director-General. This proposal was presented during the WTO General Council (GC) meeting.

Adebayo Thomas, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, confirmed the proposal in a statement released in Abuja. The move is intended to enable the Chair of the General Council to begin the process of appointing Okonjo-Iweala for a new term.

Ambassador Abdulhamid Adamu, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the WTO, highlighted that the issue was thoroughly debated among members. He noted that the discussion revealed widespread recognition of Okonjo-Iweala’s efforts and achievements during her tenure.

“All members acknowledged the significant progress and development brought about by Okonjo-Iweala’s leadership,” Adamu said. “Nearly 58 members from various regions supported the proposal, affirming that she deserves to be reappointed.”

The proposal calls for the General Council Chair to initiate consultations on the appointment process as soon as possible. In response to the proposal, Okonjo-Iweala expressed her gratitude to the members and indicated that she would respond with her acceptance after consulting with her family.

This move underscores the strong support for Okonjo-Iweala’s leadership at the WTO, reflecting the impact of her contributions to the organization’s progress.
