T he Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has lost access to its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @officialEFCC, which had 2.2 million followers. The account has been inaccessible for three days, displaying a message stating, "This account doesn’t exist."
Dele Oyewale, EFCC’s chief spokesman, confirmed the situation, attributing the disappearance to a network problem. He assured that the agency’s ICT department is actively working to restore the handle.
The disappearance of the EFCC’s account comes days after a group of suspected Internet fraudsters threatened to wage cyber warfare against the agency. These threats, posted on Reddit and other online forums, were in response to what the fraudsters claimed were unconstitutional crackdowns by the EFCC on their activities.
The EFCC has intensified its efforts against online fraudsters, conducting raids on hotels and university dormitories. However, these actions have sparked criticism from rights advocates, who accuse the agency of violating citizens' fundamental rights.
It remains unclear whether the account's disappearance was due to actions by those who issued the threats, a sanction from X for potential violations, or a deactivation by the agency itself. The EFCC's other social media platforms on Facebook and Instagram remain unaffected.
