T he Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 2,629,025 voters are expected to participate in the upcoming governorship election in Edo State on September 21. INEC’s Supervising National Commissioner for Edo, Delta, and Cross River States, Prof. Rhoda Gumus, made this announcement during the presentation of voter registers to the chairmen and representatives of the 16 political parties participating in the election.
Prof. Gumus emphasized the importance of a peaceful election, urging politicians and their supporters in Edo State to avoid violence. She stated that INEC is fully prepared for the election and assured that, with the support of security agencies, the election would be peaceful, free, and fair.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Edo, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, highlighted that 2,501,081 voters were initially registered for the 2023 general elections, and an additional 173,048 persons were registered during the Continuous Voter Registration from May 27 to June 9, 2024. He urged eligible voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) at their wards’ registration centers between August 22 and 26, after which collection would move to the INEC local government offices.
The Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council in Edo, Greg Igbinomwanhia, commended INEC for the smooth conduct of election activities and called for a peaceful election, emphasizing that Governor Godwin Obaseki’s successor must be elected without violence.
