A US citizen, Joseph Tater, has been sentenced to 15 days in a Russian prison on charges of "petty hooliganism" after allegedly attacking a police officer, according to Moscow court officials. The Meshchansky Court of Moscow handed down the administrative penalty on Wednesday, according to an official post on the Moscow City Courts' Telegram channel.
Tater was found guilty of disorderly conduct, which reportedly involved aggressive behavior, swearing, and using foul language while staying at a hotel in Moscow. According to Russian state media TASS, Tater struck a female police officer during his detention.
In addition to the 15-day sentence, Tater is facing a criminal case for using violence against a government official, which could result in a prison term of up to five years.
The US embassy in Moscow confirmed awareness of Tater's arrest but declined further comment due to privacy concerns. The US State Department is working to gather more information and assess the consular situation.
This incident occurs amid ongoing tensions between the US and Russia, with several other American citizens currently serving sentences in Russia for various convictions.
