F ormer Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales has been found guilty of sexual assault for forcibly kissing Jenni Hermoso without her consent during Spain’s Women’s World Cup victory celebrations.
Spain’s High Court delivered the verdict on Thursday, imposing a fine exceeding €10,000 ($10,434). However, Rubiales was cleared of coercion charges.
The case, which sparked global outrage and ignited discussions about sexism in women’s football, initially saw prosecutors seeking a prison sentence.
In its ruling, the court also barred Rubiales from approaching within 200 meters (656 feet) of Hermoso or communicating with her for one year.
The decision marks a significant moment in the ongoing fight for respect and equality in women’s sports, as Spain continues to address gender-related issues in football governance.
