L ionel Messi defied freezing temperatures to deliver a match-winning goal for Inter Miami, sealing a 1-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup clash on Wednesday.
The Argentine legend made his mark in the 56th minute, controlling a superb cross-field pass from Sergio Busquets before expertly guiding the ball into the far corner of the net, past Kansas City goalkeeper John Pulskamp. The goal gave Miami a vital away goal ahead of the second leg next Tuesday in Florida.
Winter Storm Couldn't Stop Messi's Magic
The match, originally scheduled for Tuesday, had been postponed by 24 hours due to a winter storm that blanketed the region in snow and plunged temperatures to an unfathomable -17°C (1°F). Despite the bitter cold, Messi and his Miami teammates battled through the elements, sporting gloves, neck warmers, and full-length leggings to stay warm.
Kansas City Struggles in Sub-Zero Conditions
Kansas City, who struggled last season finishing near the bottom of the MLS Western Conference, found themselves outclassed technically by a dominant Miami side. Luis Suarez came close on two occasions early in the match, narrowly missing in the 8th and 35th minutes, but it was Messi’s brilliance that ultimately made the difference.
Heading to Florida with an Advantage
With a crucial away win secured, Inter Miami will travel back home with an advantage as they aim to book a spot in the last 16 of the tournament. The stage is set for an intense second-leg showdown in Florida next week, with Messi’s sublime finish giving Miami a slender but significant lead.
