BREAKING: Supreme Court Sacks Julius Abure as Labour Party Chairman

 By Agboola Aluko | April 5, 2025

T he Supreme Court of Nigeria has removed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), overturning a previous ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja that had recognized him as the party’s leader.

In a unanimous judgment delivered on Friday, a five-member panel of the apex court ruled that the Court of Appeal lacked jurisdiction to declare Abure as the party’s National Chairman, especially after acknowledging that the core issue in the case revolved around the Labour Party’s internal leadership structure.

The Supreme Court emphasized that leadership disputes within political parties are internal matters that fall outside the jurisdiction of the judiciary.

The ruling came in response to an appeal filed by Senator Ester Nenadi Usman and one other, which the court upheld, deeming it meritorious. Meanwhile, a cross-appeal filed by the Abure-led faction of the Labour Party was dismissed for lacking merit.

This decision reshapes the leadership of the Labour Party, raising questions about the future direction of the party ahead of upcoming political events.
