Defections to SDP Loom as APC Governors Meet Buhari in Kaduna

By Agboola Aluko | GLiDE NEWS, Kaduna

G overnors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) paid a courtesy visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna State on Monday, amid growing defections from the ruling party to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The delegation, led by Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Hope Uzodimma, held a closed-door meeting with the former president in what was officially described as a show of solidarity and goodwill.

“We came to check on our father in politics, former President Muhammadu Buhari. He is in good health and in high spirits. We are pleased to see him and he was happy with our visit,” Uzodimma told journalists after the meeting.

Buhari’s Loyalists Jump Ship

While the visit was painted as a routine interaction, it comes at a time of growing unrest within the APC. Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, once a close ally of Buhari, recently defected to the SDP, claiming he had received Buhari’s blessing to do so.

In Buhari’s home state of Katsina, several APC members have also reportedly crossed over to the SDP, raising questions about unity within the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources within the APC told GLiDE NEWS that more defections may follow, especially among former ministers who served under Buhari. Many are said to be disillusioned with the party’s current direction under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Governors Reaffirm Party Strength

Despite the political defections, Uzodimma insisted that the APC remains Africa’s largest and strongest political party, boasting 21 sitting governors.

“The APC is solid and continues to grow stronger. The visit to our former president is a reminder that we are one united family. Former President Buhari is pleased with the progress of the party and with President Tinubu’s leadership,” Uzodimma added.

The meeting took place shortly after the Ramadan, Lent, and Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, a timing Governor Uzodimma said was symbolic of unity and reflection.

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, also praised Buhari for his ongoing support for the Tinubu administration and the APC.

“Former President Buhari continues to play a stabilising role within our party. His support for President Tinubu is unwavering,” Sani stated.

What’s Next for the APC?

While Monday’s meeting appeared cordial, analysts believe it was more than a routine check-in. With high-profile exits and murmurs of internal discontent, the visit may be part of broader efforts to stabilise the party and reassure its base ahead of critical elections.

Buhari, who ruled Nigeria for eight years under the APC banner, remains an influential figure in Nigerian politics, especially in the North. His stance—silent or active—could play a crucial role in shaping the APC’s future.
