Lagos, Nigeria – The Federal Government (FG) has directed the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos following severe traffic congestion caused by its closure for maintenance.
Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, issued the directive on Wednesday, April 2, after the bridge’s closure led to massive gridlock from Lekki through Victoria Island to Falomo Bridge and beyond.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, confirmed the decision on Wednesday night, stating that the Ministry of Works deeply regrets the inconvenience caused to motorists.
“Efforts are ongoing to ensure palliative works are carried out on the reopened bridge to make it motorable,” Kesha assured.
Lagos residents had experienced hours-long delays due to the closure, prompting urgent government intervention to restore normal traffic flow.
