Labour Party Rejects Reports on Supreme Court Ruling, Reaffirms Abure's Leadership

By Agboola Aluko, GLiDE News

T he Labour Party has strongly refuted circulating reports claiming that the Supreme Court ruling nullified the recognition of Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman. According to the party, these reports are entirely false.

In an official statement issued on Friday, Dr. Arabambi Abayomi, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, clarified that the Supreme Court's ruling had no impact on the party’s leadership structure.

"The facts of the case are clear," Abayomi explained. "The Supreme Court dismissed the suits filed by Nenadi and Abure, reaffirming that only political parties have the constitutional authority to determine their leadership. The court also emphasized that the judiciary should not intervene in the internal affairs of political parties."

The ruling also overruled previous decisions made by the trial court and the Court of Appeal. The Supreme Court, in its judgment, stated that the trial court had overstepped its jurisdiction by making rulings on the party's internal leadership matters.

“The court’s message was unequivocal – political parties must adhere to their constitutions, and the Labour Party followed its constitution in organizing the convention that led to the election of Bar Julius Abure as National Chairman and Alhaji Farouk Umar Ibrahim as National Secretary," Abayomi stated.

Consequently, the Labour Party has reaffirmed that Julius Abure remains the legitimate National Chairman, and Alhaji Farouk Umar Ibrahim continues as the National Secretary.

"The only legitimate leadership of the Labour Party is as follows: Bar Julius Abure as National Chairman and Alhaji Farouk Umar Ibrahim as National Secretary," Abayomi emphasized.

The Labour Party has urged its supporters and the general public to ignore the misinformation circulating and focus on the party’s mission and ongoing leadership.
