N igeria’s Works Minister David Umahi has announced that the Independence Bridge in Lagos will reopen to traffic by 3 PM on Friday following urgent repairs
Speaking to reporters in Lagos on Thursday evening Umahi reassured residents that the damaged section of the bridge had been fixed and a follow-up inspection was scheduled for two weeks
The bridge was closed earlier this week for maintenance and repair a decision Umahi claimed he was not informed about Federal Controller of Works in Lagos Olukorede Kesha had initially stated that the closure would last until May
The unexpected shutdown caused major traffic congestion with commuters facing long delays on key routes across the city
Umahi Orders Immediate Reopening
Following public outcry over the severe gridlock on Wednesday Umahi directed that the bridge be reopened assuring that remaining repairs would be carried out without further disruption
“I would like to announce that those heading to work tomorrow can feel confident to use this route by 3 PM This bridge will be reopened at the latest by 3 PM tomorrow to the glory of God and we are dedicated to working throughout the night to restore it” he said
He added that about 50 percent of the repair work had already been completed noting that the current fixes could serve as a permanent solution
Lagos residents can now expect improved traffic flow as the bridge resumes operations providing relief to thousands of daily commuters
