J ose Mourinho once again found himself at the centre of controversy following an altercation with Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk after Fenerbahce’s 2-1 defeat in the Turkish Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.
The Heated Incident
After the final whistle, Mourinho approached Buruk and grabbed his face, squeezing his nose momentarily. The Galatasaray coach collapsed to the ground, holding his face in visible distress. The altercation occurred amid an already intense encounter, which saw three red cards issued in the 92nd minute—one for Fenerbahce and two for the visitors. The incident added fuel to the rivalry between Fenerbahce, who are currently second in the Turkish league, and Galatasaray, the league leaders and two-time defending champions.
A Tense Relationship with Turkish Football Officials
Mourinho’s controversial behavior comes on the heels of a turbulent relationship with Turkish football officials. In February, he was handed a four-match suspension and fined for criticising referees after a league match against Galatasaray. During the match, Mourinho accused Galatasaray’s bench of “jumping like monkeys” in reaction to a refereeing decision, which led to accusations of racism. Mourinho denied these claims, but the incident further fueled tensions around his actions.
Continued Controversy
Mourinho, who took charge of Fenerbahce last summer, has frequently found himself at the center of controversy throughout his career, and this latest incident only adds to his reputation for fiery, often contentious moments on the pitch.
