A tragic accident involving a fully-loaded 40-foot container truck, five commercial buses, and two private vehicles claimed the life of a pedestrian and injured two others on Saturday along the Cele Expressway corridor, inward Oshodi in Lagos.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in an official statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq.
Preliminary investigations suggest the articulated truck, which was carrying two large containers, suffered a brake failure while moving at high speed. The resulting loss of control caused the containers to detach and crash onto surrounding vehicles, including a Toyota Camry and a Sienna bus.
“The impact caused extensive structural damage and led to multiple casualties,” the statement said. “One of the commercial bus drivers sustained multiple compound fractures to both his arm and leg.”
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) quickly evacuated the injured to the General Hospital in Isolo for urgent medical attention.
Officers of LASTMA, in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Response Unit (LRU), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and members of the public, conducted rescue operations and cleared the scene to ease the heavy traffic congestion caused by the crash. The Ijesha-Tedo Police Division also deployed officers to maintain security at the site.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery. He stressed the importance of routine mechanical checks, especially for heavy-duty and container-laden trucks.
“A full investigation has commenced to determine the cause of the accident and assign appropriate liability,” Bakare-Oki noted, adding that measures would be taken to prevent future occurrences of similar incidents.
