A devastating Russian ballistic missile strike on Kryvyi Rig—the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky—claimed the lives of at least 12 people, including three children, on Friday evening, local officials reported.
Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city’s military administration, confirmed that over 50 people were wounded in the attack, with several others in critical condition.
Dnipropetrovsk regional governor, Sergiy Lysak, took to Telegram to provide updates, stating, “Three children are among the dead,” while adding that “the number of wounded is constantly increasing.” He also noted that fires had broken out, engulfing vehicles and garages in the affected area.
Dramatic footage circulating on social media—though yet to be independently verified—showed a towering plume of smoke rising into the night sky, evidence of the missile’s destructive impact.
Kryvyi Rig, located in central Ukraine approximately 60 kilometres (37 miles) from the frontline, has become a repeated target in Russia’s ongoing missile and drone campaign. The city was also hit earlier in the week—on Wednesday—when at least four people were killed and more than a dozen injured in a separate missile strike.
The renewed violence comes amid heightened diplomatic tension. Reports indicate that the administration of US President Donald Trump is pressing for a rapid resolution to the nearly four-year-old conflict, holding talks with both Kyiv and Moscow. However, sources suggest the Kremlin has rebuffed a recent US-Ukrainian proposal for an unconditional ceasefire.
Ukraine, on its part, has accused Russia of dragging out peace negotiations with no clear intention of ending its military offensive.
As the humanitarian toll deepens, residents of Kryvyi Rig and other front-line communities brace for further escalations in a war that shows no signs of abating.
