U EFA has fined football stars Kylian Mbappé and Antonio Rüdiger for “indecent” conduct following emotionally charged celebrations after a recent Champions League match, the governing body announced on Friday.
The disciplinary action stems from scenes after Real Madrid’s penalty shootout victory over rivals Atletico Madrid in the round of 16 on March 12. UEFA stated both players were sanctioned for "violating the basic rules of decent conduct."
Rüdiger received the steepest penalty—a €40,000 fine (US$44,000) alongside a suspended one-match ban, which will hang over him for a one-year probationary period. Mbappé, also handed a suspended ban, was fined €30,000 (US$33,000). A third Madrid player, Dani Ceballos, was fined €20,000 (US$22,000) but escaped suspension.
The specific actions that prompted the charges have not been publicly detailed, but the post-match scenes were widely described as emotionally charged and provocative.
Despite the sanctions, all three players are eligible to play in next week’s Champions League quarterfinal first-leg clash, where Real Madrid travels to face Arsenal in London on Tuesday.
As UEFA continues its clampdown on unsporting behavior, Friday’s announcement serves as a warning to players about conduct on and off the pitch—especially in high-stakes European fixtures.
