Victor Olunloyo, Former Oyo Governor and Renowned Technocrat, Dies at 90

D r. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, former Governor of Oyo State and one of Nigeria’s most distinguished technocrats, has died just days shy of his 90th birthday.

A statement from the family, signed by Oladapo Ogunwusi and made available on Sunday, confirmed the passing of the elder statesman, describing him as “a mathematician, engineer and renowned technocrat” whose legacy spans decades of service to Nigeria and humanity.

“With a heavy heart but gratitude to the Almighty, we announce the passing into glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo,” the family said. “The Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, Dr. Olunloyo was the first Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan and also the first Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, among several landmark appointments.”

Widely respected for his intellect and civic contributions, Olunloyo served briefly as governor of Oyo State in the Second Republic. His death marks the end of an era, especially for those who remember his deep involvement in education, public service, and traditional leadership.

The family noted that preparations are underway to give him a befitting farewell and appealed for public understanding during this time of mourning.

In April 2024, rumours of Olunloyo’s death had made rounds across several news platforms. However, in a spirited interview at his Molete residence in Ibadan, he debunked the reports, saying, “I’m still here, not yet gone.”

The elder statesman had then reflected on the inevitability of death, saying, “Those breaking death news and the person presumed dead will all die one day.”

He recalled how a similar false report of his death went viral in June 2022, claiming he had passed away at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. Days later, his family clarified that he was alive but managing age-related ailments.

Born in 1935, Olunloyo lived a life marked by pioneering achievements, national service, and resilience. His father passed at age 42, while his mother lived to 102. “I’ve crossed the expected life age,” he once said with a sense of fulfilment.

Funeral details are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
